I agree with 2-4 and 6--not enough time to tell how they will endure.
1 stands up incredibly well almost 14 years later. I'd say classic, not overrated. 5 is a bit overhyped, and was a stylistic departure for U2, but I wouldn't call it overrated at this point. 7 is an undisputed classic. 8 may be the single greatest LP of all time. 9 is a little dicier, but still rocks and it did launch a thousand bands. 10--I'm more a Johnny Marr fan than Morrisey, but you have to give them their props. Their stuff is at least as important for that era as the early REM.

I'd add the following to a list of "overrated albums":
Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On"--great album but not one of the greatest of all time in my book. It ranks 7th on the RS 500 greatest. Stevie Wonder is a much more important artist than Marvin and his 70s albums are classics of inner city/African American rebellion.
Anything by the Eagles is overrated. James Taylor. And even Springsteen too (except for Darkness on the Edge of Town and maybe Nebraska, but Born to Run seems a tremendously overrated album now). Paul Simon's Graceland hasn't worn well, either.
Deja Vu by CSNY is overrated (Neil's the best thing in the band, but his Whiskey boot hill stuff is really weak). Neil with Crazy Horse kicks a**.
Imperial Bedroom by Elvis is overrated, I still like Trust, Armed Forces and Get Happy alot better. The rococo-and-roll seems too precious nowadays to me (Geoff Emerick notwithstanding).
Zappa seems overrated-dated, but I still have a warm place in my heart for Joe's Garage.
Do albums like The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and Jagged Little Pill stand up?
Coldplay hasn't been around enough to even rate on any list. But hey, if they have to be #2 on a list, then this one is the one they SHOULD be on. Boring, pretentious music. Annoying front man who thinks he's Bono or something.
I was listening to you until this. 'Deja Vu' is fantastic and only upstaged by 'C,S,& N's' self titled album. Have another listen please.
I love the song Deja Vu, Woodstock and Helpless--all first rate. But Almost Cut My Hair seems a little bit frivolous, although I'm as willing as the next guy to let my freak flag fly.
I guess I'm just not a Graham Nash fan--I've never liked Our House or Teach Your Children (though I do like Jerry Garcia's steel). Too preachy, too smarmy?
I guess I'm just more of a Neil solo fan. And "Country Girl" is pretty weak on 'Deja Vu.' "Everybody I Love You" sounds like a Buffalo Springfield outtake.
I agree with you, TK, the CSN album is better than CSNY. I can take Marrakesh Express, but Wooden Ships and Suite Judy Blue Eyes are truly great. Helplessly Hoping and Guinevere are also top form.
Both albums are still a whole lot better than alot of the singer-songwriter junk coming out today.
Some people might generally think it's overrated for whatever reason. I don't think it's the Beatles best..but in no way am I dissing it or fitting into a trend.
You've got to take these lists with a grain of salt. A few years back, Rolling Stone listed the top 100 songs of ALL TIME--the fucking Backstreet Boys had the #10 song of ALL TIME. Whatever stupid song it was outranked countless songs by Dylan, the Stones, Beatles, etc. It hasn't stood any test of time, the song was only 1 or 2 years old, its preposterous. "Sergeant Pepper" can't ever be overrated, whether you like it or not, its a 4 track masterpiece, was groundbreaking for its time, and set the bar waayy high. Some people don't think it has aged well. I think it has aged just fine.
I can understand how an average Joe Blow CD buyer, on seeing Pepper top a poll of "greatest", would listen to it and go WTF. If you dont know what went before and after. we know its a 4 track masrerpiece. I think the problem is that greatest means different things to different people. For some its "best songs" or "best selling" or "most revolutionary." Its like movies. Youd be hard pressed, for instance, to convince your average 20 yearold DVD watcher that Citizen Kane is one of the greatest movies ever. To them it would be just another dodgy black and white. they cant put it into context. So while I dont agree with them, I can see where theyre coming from. Bless them.
