More reviews ...

"Overall, a more balanced album than "Chaos and Creation", but missing the Beatle-esque style tune of "Friends to Go". Hard to describe, but it's like "Ram" meets "Back to the Egg". Which is VERY, very good in my book.

[...]

This album is pretty deep - he's all over the place. Fun rockers, songs that almost completely reflect his past, with some excellent "Magnesium and Titanium Man" meets "Uncle Albert"-type stylings. I can't imagine this review is helping much to create the feel of the record in your head...

Bottom line: A great album that will please the McCartney fan more than a newbie... but that's okay. He's 64 and kicking everyone else's butt - a shockingly solid album for a guy who usually follows up a critically-praised album like "Flaming Pie" with the dreaded, "Driving Rain". Kahne must have gotten a good talking-to to get the producing job again - and he doesn't disappoint!

Track Listing:

1. Dance Tonight - A "Ram"-like opening. Fun little ditty - love it actually, a real treat. Like a "Hello" version of his song, "Goodbye". A simple song played on ukelele - sounds odd when you first put on the album, but it thankfully changes direction. A light toe-tapper, but then it kicks into...

2. Ever Present Past - Great rocker. Kicks butt. My favorite McCartney single in YEARS. Most have heard this one already. Driving verses and goes into a catchy and simple Macca-esque chorus.

3. See Your Sunshine - Thought the song was called, "So Fine" - it repeats many times. Well-produced, with a bit of "So Bad" in it... not the best, but still good. Great bridge in this.

4. Only Mama Knows - Total "Back to the Egg" McCartney. Rocks harder than anything since. Catchy melody, too. I love it. Starts with a unique and rather ominous classical-type string arrangement before kicking into the hard-driving rocker it is.

5. You Tell Me - Intense ballad. Maybe I should hold off on my review because I can't play the music right now. I haven't memorized lyrics yet. Would fit on "Chaos" perfectly.

6. Mr. Bellamy - Excellent song! SO odd and different. Wild little piano piece that changes style many times over his singing. Closest thing I can associate with it is one of his songs for animation. He does a few voices but it's SO well written. The closest thing he's ever come to do something like this is, "Return to Pepperland". This SMOKES "Pepperland" but it's the only way to describe it... I think it's about his cat. That's my guess! About "someone" who won't "come down" from somewhere because it will interfere with their "plans". I love this track.

7. Gratitude - Ugh. A bit of a show stopper, the weakest song on the album (though still okay) - he sounds like he's singing through his dentures. One of his attempts at "Souvenir" or "Call Me Back Again" though it doesn't work so well. He starts the song with singing "Gratitude... gratitude..." which is a bit amelodic. Again, doesn't do much for me. The melody is better than the execution... I wish he dropped the whole "Gratitude" part. You can really hear his spittle rumbling behind his teeth. "Grat(spittle)it(spittle)yuuude".

8. Vintage Clothes - Another excellent song. "What we are is what we are and what we are vintage clothes" he sings. It's modern but turns Beatle-esque in certain parts. A bit tongue in cheek - not too corny, though. It's cool.

9. That Was Me - Acoustic driven song about things he's done. Like "Summer of '59" (a b-side from "Chaos") - very similar actually. Just a few chords. I like it though.

10. Feet In The Clouds - Another lighter song in an acoustic vein...

11. House Of Wax - I'm blanking on this one but it's a rather intense ballad like "You Tell Me".

12. End Of The End - Wow. Killer. The melody didn't hook me at first, but now it does. It's raw (Paul whistles!) both production-wise (piano with scant strings) and lyrically. It could have been corny and awful, but he anticipates his death not with the more obvious, "I hope when I die, peace prevails" but rather about how he's going to a better place and he hopes jokes are told and stories are relayed fondly now that he's gone...

13. Nod Your Head (hidden track) - Hard guitars don't help this much - basic melody. If you like him, nod your head. And if you forgot how, he tells you to nod it up... then down."

Doesn't sound bad   ...

And more lyrics:

Mr. Bellamy (McCartney)

I'm not coming down
No matter what you
I like it up here without you

Go light, Mr. Bellamy
We'll have you down soon

No one to tell me what to do
No one to hold my hand
Bellamy's got a lot to do
And I hope that you'll understand

Nobody here to spoil the view
Interfere with my plans
Bellamy's got a job to do
And he's hoping you'll understand

Steady, Lads
and Easy Does It
Ooooh, don't frighten him!
Here we go...

I'm not coming down
No matter what say
I like it up here anyway

Sit tight, Mr. Bellamy
This shouldn't take long

In the delusionary state
No wonder he's been feeling strange of late
In the delusionary state
No wonder he's been feeling strange of late

Nobody here to spoil the view
Interfere with my plans
Bellamy's got a job to do
And he's hoping you'll understand

Steady, Lads
and Easy Does It
Don't frighten him!
Here we go...
Here we go...

I'm not coming down
No matter what you
I like it up here without you

(outro) Come down, come down to me (4X)

Bob Dylan talks about Paul to Rolling Stone:

"....Hard to find a better singer than [John] Lennon was or McCartney was and still is. I mean I'm in awe of McCartney. He's about the only one that I am in awe of. But I'm in awe of him. He can do it all and he's never let up, you know. He's got the gift for melody, he's got the rhythm. He can play any instrument. He can scream and shout as good as anybody and he can sing the ballad as good as anybody, you know so... And his melodies are, you know, effortless. That's what you have to be in awe... I'm in awe of him maybe just because he's just so damn effortless. I mean I just wish he'd quit, you know. [laughs] Just everything and anything that comes out of his mouth is just framed in a melody, you know ..."

I was thinking about this. i think to gain some credibility Paul needs to do a Johny Cash: abandon the processed vocals and pleasant ditties and present himself to the world warts and all. I know Paul will never bare his soul on record, but it might be time for little honesty. An accoustic album?
This song could have been released anytime in the last forty years.

The trouble with this is that we all know how Paul's voice used to sound, and what he could do with it. Can we accept it any other way? Cash never had a 'great' voice, and his took on a character and feeling all of it's own which I'm sure is what encouraged his and Rick Rubens' choice of songs. Paul's will never have that. In fact when unprocessed he's getting dangerously close to sounding like an old man with a cold.

More lyrics ...

Only Mama Knows (McCartney)

Verse one:
Well, I was found in the transit lounge
of a dirty airport town
What was I doing on the road to ruin
Well my mama laid me down
My mama laid me down

Verse two:
Around my hand was a plastic band
With a picture of my face
I was crying, left to die
in this godforsaken place
This godforsaken place

Chorus:
Only Mama knows
what she laid me down
in this godforsaken town
She was running too
What she was running from
I always wondered
I never knew
Only Mama knows
Only Mama knows

Middle:
I'm passing through
I'm on my way
On the road, no ETA
I'm passing through
No fixed abode
And that is why....
I need to try
To hold on
I've got to hold on (3X)

Verse three:
Was it planned as a one night stand
or did she live in disgrace
Well, I never
will I ever
see my father's face
See my father's face

Repeat Chorus (2X)

Gotta hold on... (4X)

It seems that one copy of that CD single is up for sale on Ebay with this description: a plain black cover with the name and song title in pink, and the back cover is just white with the song title and other information listed.

Macca's voice is so regonizable & i think
just about everyone knows who is when he sings
on record, radio etc. That's the great thing about this.
all the beatles (even Ringo ) had distintive vocal styles.
lennon wasen't vocally trained or anything like that, but it was
the express he put into his solo records. I find a lot of
singer's who are great today but when you strip the songs bear & realize
they never wrote it, it dosen't mean anything . People say, 'oh he or she has
got a great voice', but i've always been intrested in the meaning of the song
or the structure of songs.
I prefer people like McCartney, lennon, dylan etc. they may not have been
amazing singers but it was the expression they put into their work.
I don't wheather this makes sense   but it's my personal view anyway

MERRY "FAB" CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
