Just for general information:
Ruth McCartney
As Ruth Williams, she became a member of the McCartney clan at the age of five when, on 24 November 1964, her 34-year-old widowed mother Angela married 62-year-old Jim McCartney.
Ruth became Paul’s stepsister, was given the McCartney surname and went to live in Rembrandt, the McCartney’s’ home in Hoylake on the Wirral. She recalls that Paul used to refer to her as ‘Scabby’ because she grazed her knees so often. After she’d broken her leg Paul bought her a pet dog, which she called Hamish.
Jane Asher was a frequent companion of Paul’s in the first three years of Ruth’s life at Rembrandt and the young actress taught her to ride a bicycle. At school locally, Ruth came in for a fair amount of bullying from other children, jealous of her meeting the various famous guests who visited Rembrandt, such as Rod Stewart.
At the age of nine she was learning to play the piano and one day was attempting to play ‘Golden Slumbers’, a traditional hymn. She wasn’t very successful, so Paul helped her out — and as a result he penned his own ‘Golden Slumbers’, which was included on the Abbey Road album. Ruth also recalls that Paul made up a song about her on the spur of the moment at a birthday party.
As a young girl she observed the breakdown of Paul’s romance with Jane Asher and the flowering of his relationship with Linda. Ruth, her mother and Jim were guests of Paul and Linda at the Campbeltown farm, where the conditions were very spartan, according to Ruth.
At fifteen, Ruth took an interest in choreography but claims that she didn’t get much encouragement from Paul. Ruth spent twelve years in the McCartney family, but following Jim McCartney’s death circumstances changed.
For a time Ruth led a dance trio called Talent, but didn’t achieve much success. In 1981 she moved to Kings Lynn where she shared a flat with her mother and worked as a salesgirl at the local Debenham’s store. But the McCartney name still brought her to the attention of the press. She returned to her love of dancing and in March 1982 entered a ‘Claim To Fame’ dance competition at the Embassy Club in Mayfair, London, in which she won a heat.
Julian Lennon had a sponsorship link with the competition and as a result the press romantically linked their names.
Eventually Ruth went to live in Los Angeles to pursue a career in show business and appeared in successful tours of Russia and Eastern Europe, where she was dubbed the Moscow Madonna. She lived in various countries with her mother and they settled in Nashville in an apartment shared by Angie, Ruth and her boyfriend Martin Nethercutt.
Ruth is currently writing her autobiography.
